My Facebook Video Ads Experiment - Tom Ray's Art Podcast

On this episode of the podcast, I talk about what I’m trying out currently with Facebook ads to promote what I do.

And I’m testing this out for $1 a day

Ads used to work great! Old way

I've used Facebook and Instagram ads to help find an audience since the beginning.

They were image ads, headlines, and a lead form ads

I was spending $5 a day in the past

All I needed was a headline and audience to show them to on Facebook

I still get results from these but...

Ads got expensive! I needed to find a new way

My main objective: Growing an audience of people interested in what I make

In the past year, I ran these ads and the cost got more expensive

The new Facebook audience restrictions aren't bad for me cuz the subject is what I use to find people

Tested a few things to bring the cost down - I decided to spend $1 a day or it's not worth it

One thing I realized ads cost is best when I keep people on the Facebook platform

Advertising my videos

How do I promote my work and keep people on the platform?

I make a lot of videos including my podcast, the retro toys I sell, and music videos for my band

Advertise these videos to people to watch them on the platform

I looked through my previous videos for the more popular ones

I started repurposing this content that was already there

Facebook Method

My first video ad experiment

My band just released a video and had a show coming up

Created a video views campaign with that music video using a thru play conversion

Set that up to only show on Facebook feeds and Facebook watch

For my $1 a day budget I was converting at 3 cents a thru play!

Retargeting to thru play watchers

Create an audience from the thru play video watchers

Made a new image ad as an engagement ad conversion

That ad would send people to a landing page to subscribe or sign up

Why I'm liking this video ad experiment

I used what I already had

I have videos for all the different things I do to do this - retro vlog, and podcast

Videos that are 3 min to 15 minutes long seem to work best for thru play

What's next?

I am trying out youtube video ads right now and it's going pretty good too!

I'm in the middle of testing those out so I'll talk about how that went on another podcast.
